Organizational framework

The main objective of FAO country offices, headed by an FAO Representative, is to help governments develop policies, programs and projects to achieve food security and reduce hunger and malnutrition, help develop the agricultural, fisheries, forestry sectors and use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable way.

This vacancy is part of the project approved by the Green Climate Fund “ Chile REDD-plus Payment for Results period 2014-2016 ” than FAO, in association with the National Forest Corporation of Chile ( CONAF ), it will execute to increase the resilience of ecosystems and native forest, and contribute to mitigating climate change in Chile. The project will contribute to reducing the social, environmental and economic vulnerability generated by climate change and desertification; land degradation and drought in forests and local communities that depend on them in 6 regions of the country ( Maule, Biobío, Ñuble, Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos ).

Technical staff represent an important source of expertise for FAO and make their specialized contributions worldwide to achieve the strategic objectives of the Organization. In order for FAO to attract and employ the best possible experts in the wide range of technical areas of its mandate, a competitive selection process has been introduced.

Hierarchical dependency

Under the general supervision of the National Project Coordinator, the direct supervision of the Technical Assistant and the Regional Technical Specialist of the Project in FAO, with the technical advice of the Head Department of Conservation of Forest and Xerophytic Ecosystems, coordinator of Climate Change and Provincial Head of the Rank.

Field of specialization

The Viverista has the task of supporting the strategic functions of the CONAF province of Ranco nurseries, in order to promote the production of plants, preferably native ones, those that will be destined for the Project + Forests financed by the Green Climate Fund within the framework of the ENCCRV and the REDD + approach, ensuring, on the one hand, the achievement of the objectives and goals proposed in accordance with the policies and regulations established by FAO; the Green Climate Fund and by the State of Chile and, on the other, the generation of environmental, economic and social co-benefits for vulnerable groups defined in the ENCCRV, through the implementation of the ENCCRV action measures.

The place of performance will be the CONAF nurseries located in the province of Ranco, Los Ríos region. Likewise, the Nurseryman must be available to make frequent field trips, inside and / or outside the region.

Tasks and responsibilities

  •  Schedule, instruct, direct and supervise all cultural management activities for the optimal production of plants of forest species associated with the project.
  •  Prepare a program of plant production activities to be carried out in nurseries located in the Ranco province.
  •  Provide advice on plant production in 5 nurseries in the province of Ranco, where you must make two monthly visits by Vivero.
  •  Prepare documents that inform the protocols of production of plants at bare roots; mixed and root covered, for forest species produced in nurseries.
  •  Direct germplasm collection, processing and storage.
  •  Prepare and maintain record / inventory of plants available in the nursery.
  •  Permanently train nursery personnel in the different stages of plant production, from germplasm harvesting to obtaining and delivering plants according to project requirements.
  •  Participate in training and technical transfer activities arranged by the + Forest project.
  •  Prepare, whenever necessary, technical reports, terms of reference, reports, presentations and any other required product associated with the nature of the project.
  •  Control the adequate protection and maintenance of goods and supplies in general, associated with the + Forests project.
  •  Collaborate in the delivery or training of technical and professional guidelines to projects associated with the production of native plants that are carried out in the territory considering the areas of action of the ENCCRV and the environmental and social safeguards and the project’s gender action plan.
  •  Update supporting documentation and contracting supports for goods and services associated with the project.
  •  Attend regional and central level meetings associated with the project.
  •  It will be your responsibility, to administer, supervise and instruct the various tasks and functions of the personnel of or nurseries associated with the Green Climate Fund in the region.
  •  The professional shall perform other functions related to the themes of the performance area entrusted by the Headquarters.

THE CANDIDATES / US WILL BE EVALUATED IN ARRANGE TO THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Minimum requirements

  •  Professional Title: Engineer ( a ) Forest; Engineer ( a ) in conservation of Natural Resources; Engineer ( a ) in Environment and Natural Resources; Engineer ( a ) Environmental; or, related professional.
  •  Verifiable experience of at least 3 years in activities related to nursery work and plant production.
  •  Spanish domain ( C level )
  •  Chilean nationality. Residence in the Los Ríos Region.

Selection criteria

  •  Demonstrable experience in the production of plants and / or collection of forest seeds. Demonstrable experience in the production of native plants will be applicable.
  •  Desirable knowledge of FAO, CONAF, ENCCRV and the + Forests Project.
  •  Knowledge of the institutional and regulatory framework of the forest and environmental area in force in Chile.
  •  Verifiable experience of at least 3 years in activities related to nursery work and plant production, sowing, recognition and collection of native and exotic seeds, and production and management of native and exotic plants.
  •  Proven ability to perform teamwork.
  •  Availability to go out on the ground both inside and outside the Los Ríos region.
  •  Immediate availability.
  •  Availability for the execution of shifts on weekends, especially in summer, depending on the needs of the nurseries.
  •  Experience in sowing, recognizing and collecting native and exotic seeds.
  •  Proofable experience in the work of production and management of native and exotic plants.
  •  Verifiable training in plant production, through vegetative reproduction and sowing, etc.
  •  Availability to support the activities of CONAF nurseries, inside and outside the region.
  •  Have a Class B driver’s license.
  •  Own 4×4 vehicle. The maintenance, fuel loading, toll payment and in general any other expense associated with the use of the vehicle within the framework of the project, will be the cost and expense of the nurseryman.
