ABOUT WFP

Currently, within the framework of the project “ WFP assistance for humanitarian aid to the vulnerable population in the scenario of the post-COVID19 food emergency in Peru ” and financed by BHA -USAID in the period July 2022 – December 2023, It is planned to implement the operational strategy to consolidate food rescue in Lima and expand to other regions as a mechanism for community resilience to crises. In this operational food rescue strategy, it is important to professionalize the food rescue model in Lima, specifically in the large wholesale market and that this is sustainable over time; therefore, it is proposed to support the improvement of the process, ensuring the safety and quality of food through regular control actions. These foods, product of food rescue activity, mainly fresh as vegetables, fruits and tubers, are incorporated into the food baskets of the Common Ollas of Lima that are registered in the information system called Mankachay of MIDIS and are used in the daily preparation of food that is delivered to the population most vulnerable to food insecurity. Therefore, WFP recommends ensuring the quality and safety of these foods during the collection process, selection and purification prior to their transfer to the common pots and in this sense it is considered necessary to incorporate a Food Technology Assistant into the work team of the WFP Peru, who is a specialist in the quality and safety of food, that it develop the necessary actions to control the food rescue process so that the safety of the distributed products is adequate.
