Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Spanish and Portuguese Section in Language Services, the selected candidate will translate and/or revise the full range of IMF documents and publications into Portuguese. They will also, on occasion, translate from French and/or Spanish into Portuguese, as well as from Portuguese into English. Specifically, the selected candidate will:
- Translate, without revision, the most complex or urgent texts.
- Prepare final translations of assigned texts using word-processing, spreadsheet, and other relevant software, including computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools.
- Solve translation problems by researching points of terminology, language and subject matter to ensure that translations are equivalent in meaning and style to original texts.
- Revise/review translations prepared by freelancers for accuracy, appropriateness of language and style, clarity, etc.
- Participate in the training, development and evaluation of freelancers.
- Organize work to meet assigned deadlines.
- As necessary, consult with authors and other experts within or outside the IMF to clarify meaning as required.
- Act as authority in IMF translation/terminology in Portuguese and help manage the Portuguese Translation Memory and Terminology Database.
- Assist the Section Chief in managing and updating the roster of Portuguese freelance translators.
Qualifications and Experience:
Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in translation, linguistics, economics, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant work experience, is required.
In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards, the candidates must have the following: Portuguese as a mother tongue and excellent knowledge of English; and advanced knowledge of French and/or Spanish is desirable.
Other requirements include: proven project management skills, and ability to manage multiple requests and prioritize tasks; experience working in a technologically advanced environment, using CAT tools and translation management systems; superior knowledge of translation and revision procedures and techniques; capacity to work well under pressure and to adapt rapidly to changing requirements while maintaining high levels of production and quality; ability to work as part of a team; good interpersonal skills; and ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with IMF staff at all levels.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to take translation and revision tests and will be invited to an interview.
This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent’s performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
