UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’ s goals are:

  •  to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
  •  to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
  •  to support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
  •  to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. In 2023, UNICRI launched a new research initiative to enhance the knowledge and understanding of how terrorist and violent extremists use the dark web and, in particular, the degree to which the crime-as-a-service model’s role is being utilized to augment the existing capabilities of terrorist and violent extremist groups and individuals to carry out cyber-enabled terrorism. Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the incumbent will perform the following tasks:
  •  Schedule, coordinate the logistics and provide support for weekly research meetings with the primary researcher and weekly coordination meeting with UNOCT as substantive partner for the research.
  •  Facilitate the dissemination of a survey to cyber units in law enforcement and counter-terrorism agencies, compiling feedback received and supporting the interpretation of data in close coordination with the primary researcher.
  •  Support, in close coordination with and under the guidance of the primary researcher, the drafting of specific components of the resulting analytical report on the dark web, incorporating data and analysis collected by the primary researcher.
  •  Support with the organization of a expert group meeting on the dark web to present findings of the research, adjusting and aligning the research orientation according to input received.
  •  Perform other job-related duties as tasked.

Qualifications/special skillsHigh School Diploma (or equivalent) is required. At least one year of relevant work experience, such as supporting research-oriented projects and/or coordinating with diverse stakeholders, is required. Experience working in a research environment is desirable. Experience with the dark web, cybercrime and cybersecurity is considered an asset.

LanguagesFor this position, fluency in oral and written English is required.
