CONTEXT

Established in 1951, IOM is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, working closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM works to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does this by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

IOM Côte d’Ivoire, through the LMI-MECC unit, is actively engaged in developing an in-depth understanding of the country’s migration challenges, particularly with regard to the interactions between Migration, Environment and Climate Change, as well as labour migration.

In this regard, the unit aims to promote regular migration routes as vectors of development and social inclusion for migrant workers.

With the increasing impact of climate change and environmental degradation on people’s living conditions, it is crucial to identify ways to ensure community resilience. Moving people to more favourable environments, including workers seeking better conditions or specific opportunities, is one response to these challenges.

To better understand these dynamics, IOM Côte d’Ivoire has implemented several projects that include studies targeting environmental and migration issues, based on rigorous data collection and analysis. These studies, once finalized, require adequate editing and promotion in order to share the information collected with stakeholders and strengthen understanding of migration dynamics in relation to the environment and access to work opportunities.
