This figure represents an increase compared to 2020, when four million people were already plunged into hunger between 2020 and 2021 and comes on top of an increase of nine million people between 2019 and 2020. In 2021, more than 40 percent of the region – 268 million people – faced moderate or severe food insecurity. The latter affected 93 million people – 14.2 percent of the population – representing an increase of almost 30 million compared to 2019.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes so every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need. WFP’s Supply Chain Cash-Based Transfers team (SCOL-R) global mission remains removing ‘Market Inefficiencies to Improve Access, Price, Quality and Service for the Vulnerable’ through the creation of sustainable markets in support of zero hunger. With USD 2.1 billion transferred to 38 million people in 67 countries in 2020 (up from USD 10 million in 10 countries in 2009), 5,903 retailers contracted globally, 6,541 shops providing assistance to beneficiaries, and 1,356 markets mapped in 36 countries, there is a need to support Country Offices in setting up more efficient, standardized, and automated processes, coupled with the tools required to measure the impact of WFP’s work in markets. Irrespective of the delivery mechanism within CBT chosen to assist beneficiaries effectively and efficiently, Supply Chain (SC) has an active value-add role to play – from assessment to sourcing to reconciliation and market development activities.
