Independent reports The Spanish Government is to lock the country up as part of its state of emergency interventions to battle coronavirus.

Spaniards will be ordered to stay at home, except for buying food or medications, going to the hospital, going to work or other emergencies, according to a draft decree.

As part of the state of emergency, El Mundo states that Spain’s interior ministry will control all police forces, including local and regional ones.

The government said the cabinet meeting was still in progress which is expected to deliberate on the steps. A news conference is expected around 2pm.

The development came as flights from the UK bound for Spain were forced on Saturday to turn back mid-air due to health crisis.

Although Jet2 made the announcement that it would cancel all flights before Spain implemented the nationwide measure, the decision was made in the light of a sharp rise in infections there and a state of emergency declaration earlier this week.

Spain’s health authorities said coronavirus infections hit 5,753 people on Saturday, half of whom are in Madrid, the capital. That represents a national 24-hour increase of more than 1,500.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez admitted Friday that the number of infections in the coming days could exceed 10,000.

In introducing a similar lockout, Spain followed Italy’s direction after both European countries struggled to contain the virus in regional hotspots.

On 9 March, when it reported more than 9,000 infections, Italy extended the strict restriction on movement from the north into the region. It then continued on March 11 and closed down all retail outlets except for some supermarkets and pharmacies.

People in Madrid and northeast Catalonia, already in Spain, woke up Saturday to shuttered bars and restaurants and other non-essential commercial outlets as ordered the day before by regional authorities.

Spain’s decision came as other European countries took ever more extreme, though widespread, steps to slow the pandemic and minimize communication between their people.
