Duties andResponsibilities
This consultancy is intended to develop capacities of member states representatives on the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems to support monitoring and evaluation efforts related to groundwater resources. This includes training member states on the use of satellite technologies for groundwater management and to assess the impacts of extraction on groundwater storage. Under the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resources Sustainability Cluster Leader, the consultant would report directly to the Integrated Water Resources Management for Improved Water Security Coordinator and will be responsible for the following duties: • Prepare interactive training material for a regional workshop on accessing and using GRACE data for the analysis of groundwater storage in the region. The training will be conducted in coordination with ESCWA on the agenda/topics and developing PowerPoint presentations on the material to be covered in the workshop. • Perform preliminary analysis of GRACE data for several transboundary aquifers in the region to support capacity development activities in the workshop and for upload on the Arab Groundwater Knowledge Platform. • Deliver a set of interactive exercises as prototypes for capacity development at the regional workshop. • Deliver the training at the regional workshop
Qualifications/special skillsA a master’s university degree in Earth observation, geo-information science or related area is required. A Ph.D is desirable. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of ten years of experience in the areas of earth observation and geo-information science is required. A robust knowledge about GRACE mission applications on groundwater basins monitoring is required. A minimum of one year of experience working in the area of groundwater management is required. Experience organizing consultations and working with local stakeholder groups is desirable.
LanguagesLanguages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required. Note: “Fluency†equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of†equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
