Organizational Context

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 191-member National Societies. The overall aim of IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” IFRC works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises.

IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement), together with its member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The work of the IFRC is guided by the following fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

IFRC is led by its Secretary General, and has its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The Headquarters are organized into three main Divisions: (i) National Society Development and Operations Coordination; (ii) Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization; and (iii) Management Policy, Strategy and Corporate Services.

IFRC has five regional offices in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. IFRC also has country cluster delegation and country delegations throughout the world. Together, the Geneva Headquarters and the field structure (regional, cluster and country) comprise the IFRC Secretariat.

The Communications Department, which is based in the GRHDD, is headed by a Director who has direct line management responsibilities over the managers of the following units: (i) Xmedia Campaigning; (ii) Media and Advocacy; (iii) Strategy and Global Network. The Director also had technical management responsibilities over the Communication Managers in each of the five regions. This position reports to the Manager, Xmedia Campaigning, at IFRC Headquarters in Geneva.

Job Purpose

The job holder’s role is to ensure the IFRC website becomes the central digital hub for IFRC, ensuring the coordination and creation of high-quality content that will continue to engage existing users while attracting new audiences.

The job holder will drive the implementation of the web strategy, using several tools and tactics, including storytelling, to engage IFRC website’s respective audiences.

The role will also include the production and dissemination of the IFRC Podcast which aims at profiling IFRC leadership, staff, and volunteers from across the world.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Develop and implement a web content workplan to showcase IFRC’s humanitarian work and to increase digital engagement among staff and the public.
  •  Lead and coordinate planning and content creation for IFRC multilingual website.
  •  Coordinate the work of the Arabic, French and Spanish language content editors and ensure adherence to IFRC standards and style.
  •  Identify, review, and decide upon all requests for new material to be added to the website to ensure consistency, accuracy and compliance with IFRC’s goals, values, priorities, and brand.
  •  Monitor content performance metrics and provide regular analysis on ifrc.org performances and adapt strategy based on data-driven evidence; suggest recommendations for content optimization.
  •  Ensure that priority communications moments — such as emergencies, report launches, donor events — are reflected on the website in a timely, compelling, and engaging way.
  •  Continuously review, update, and tweak existing materials to ensure that information is timely, relevant, and diverse and in line with IFRC’s priorities.
  •  Integrate storytelling as a cross-cutting tool throughout the IFRC website to inspire existing and new audiences.
  •  Continually identify and suggest improvements to functionality of the website, and work with technical web team colleagues to implement them.
  •  Respond promptly to all content-related queries received via webteam@ifrc.org and manage inbox.
  •  Under direct supervision and direction of the Director of the Communications Department, and in collaboration with relevant colleagues, design, produce and ensure the dissemination and promotion of the IFRC podcast.
  •  Facilitate the IFRC podcast lab, a team of colleagues from different units who contribute to the production of the podcast.
  •  Prepare and plan podcast interviews by managing the preparation of the editorial and production calendar, conducting research, preparing interview questions, and managing recording, editing, episode publication and promotion, and analytics.
  •  Support the host of the podcast during creation and production.

Education

Preferred:

  •  University degree (master’s or equivalent) in any relevant area.

Experience

Required:

  •  At least 7 years of work experience in the humanitarian or development sector.
  •  Demonstrated professional experience in an international or cross-cultural environment with a focus on strategic and corporate communication.

Preferred:

  •  Experience with multimedia content creation, writing and editing for different platforms.
  •  Experience of podcast and/or AV production.
