AUAF Background

The American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) is a private, non-profit university offering an American-style Liberal Arts education. We opened our doors in 2005, and currently offer four undergraduate academic majors and an MBA program. Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide leadership for the Development Office by curating and managing fundraising efforts for the University by creating and executing a comprehensive strategic outreach plan those fuels development programs, advocacy, and awareness.

This position will work remotely and interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis as we receive the CVs and AUAF reserves the right to proceed with the hiring process as they find a suitable candidate for the position.

Key outcomes include:

  • Creating a strategic development and outreach plan for the department and its team
  • Leading and supervising projects and grants, proposals, and reports
  • Supervising deliverables of the projects and grants
  • Leading and supervising the project plans and executions
  • Leading and supervising the successes of the projects and grants
  • Leading a small, but dynamic, Development team

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates a strategic outreach plan for university development and fundraising. Clear goals and metrics will be established.
  • Sets annual fundraising objectives for the University according to short- and long-term goals.
  • Maintains a list of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  • Oversees the Development office and staff. Assigns, plans, and oversees the work of this staff.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive (for grants and staff).
  • Works with the Chief of Staff to determine the mission, purpose, and priorities of the organization.
  • Produces relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to previous donors and the public.
  • Research potential sources of, and applies for, grants and public funding.
  • Oversees the fundraising process and maintains records of receipts and disbursements of funds.
  • Plans fundraising events that effectively communicate the purposes of the organization.
  • Oversees the quality and progress of the service and deliverables of the projects and grants.
  • Supervises projects and grants reports and shares them with donors in a timely manner.
  • Supervises students’ and beneficiaries’ data bases for each project and grant
  • Leads and solves students’ and beneficiaries’ concerns and problems.
  • Manages and supervises data management and accessibility, ensuring that all application documents are properly maintained regarding each project and grant
  • Leads and supervises technical support and digital solutions for the proper implementation of the projects and grants.
  • Assists the Development Manager and Assistant and other team members by providing appropriate direction and ongoing feedback, delegating tasks and highlighting priorities.
  • Assists Development Manager and Assistant in any post-award grant revisions and conducts debriefs to share feedback.
  • Ensures proper communication between the donor, sub-awardee and project/grant team.
  • Assists the Development Manager and Assistant to monitor all grant materials and suggests changes to ensure compliance requirements such as quality control and material review
  • Maintains proper communication with the sub-awardee and tracks sub-award deliverables
  • Supervises the collection of reports from sub-awardee of project and grants
  • Provides guidance to the Student Success team for any institutional collaboration with other universities and institutions on an international level
  • Leades and supervises effective coordination with other departments (M&E, Alumni Office, Student Success, Registrar, Admissions, IT, HR, Finance and Procurement, and academic departments) for the proper implementation of projects and grants
  • Improves report quality while maintaining donor relations
  • Manages capacity-building of the subordinates and the team
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Qualification, Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Must have 3 years’ experience in fundraising; experience in a nonprofit organization or higher education preferred
  • Fluent English speaker; other language skills a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of tax planning principles and techniques that favor charitable giving

Other Skills:

  • Experience in a nonprofit organization or higher education preferred
  • Ability to function with a high degree of independence and to act very collaboratively in development and execution of development and fundraising strategies
  • Strong competency with standard software applications, and ability to learn new software
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills; attention to detail.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and creatively, thoroughly, and confidentially; work independently under pressure.
  • Exceptional project and team management skills.
