Vacancy/Title: Journalism Trainer consultant for an Iraq based program (Arabic speaking)

Project Title: Strengthening Digital Media Skills for Female Journalists & Civil Society in Iraq

Contract Duration: October 15th, 2023 – February 29th, 2024. This position is a part-time consultancy.

Scope: Journalism Trainer will develop a training curriculum and implement the program to 16 journalists and 9 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from Iraq with the goal to increase the capacity of women to lead processes and manage teams/projects in their own processional realm. This includes developing a program that is tailored to support production and publication of pieces with topics/angles chosen by the participants, in addition to leadership and management skills.

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) gGmbH is a German media development organisation that implements projects in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. MiCT’s activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation. For the past 12 years MiCT has been conducting investigative reporting training and has produced investigative reports in cooperation with local journalists in Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan & South Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Background:

In continuation of MiCT’s previous work, MiCT is looking for two journalist trainers and mentors who will closely work with and support a group of 16 media makers in Iraq by upskilling in their digital media creation and output, ultimately strengthening their professional skills and supporting a female journalist network. MiCT is looking for journalist trainers who have the technical know-how on training in fact-checking, broadcasting (podcasts, video, and visuals), content creation on social media (audience engagement, branding, visuals), as well as investigative journalism (data journalism, interviewing methodologies). Each journalist will receive a stipend, which the trainer/mentor will also closely follow-up on.

Deliverables:

  • Develop an engaging curriculum on technical journalistic skills, production skills, incorporating lessons learned from previous project.
  • Train and mentor 16 journalists to design, and work on their journalistic productions to the highest quality.
  • Research, design and produce training manuals and guides journalist’s trainings
  • Design mentoring schedules for all journalists
  • Work with Project Coordinator, M&E Coordinator, and support participants in creating their productions
  • Support journalists to create and publish their journalistic productions.
  • Support in recruitment of participants in the training program.
  • Ensure the programme maintains the highest standards of ethical journalism and standards

Required:

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience managing a media outlet, conducting training for journalists or editors, and/or producing/editing quality online news or featured content.
  • Demonstrated expertise as a trainer, editorial or managerial consultant/mentor, or in a related educational role working with media professionals, particularly in online training.
  • Professional fluency in modern techniques for digital storytelling, audience engagement, and multi-platform reporting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the media sector in Iraq.
  • Fluency in Arabic and proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing) are essential.
  • High professionalism, self-motivation, efficiency, and results-oriented delivery on short timelines, ensuring your mentoring is the best quality for the participants.
  • Risk management – good understanding of the full range of health and safety and risk management issues affecting productions.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience and familiarity with gender related issues and the political situation in Iraq.
  • Ideally based in Iraq
  • Understanding of the principles of behaviour /social change communication (SBCC)
