UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a Geneva office-based internship1 in the Statelessness Section in the Division of International Protection. The internship will be for 6 months and run from March to September 2023. The recruited intern will get valuable hands-on experience with UNHCR’s work related to its statelessness mandate and is expected to contribute fresh perspectives, legal research and and writing support to the work of the Statelessness Section. UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. We are present in over 125 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. To implement UNHCR’s global mandate on statelessness, the Statelessness Section of the Division of International Protection (DIP) supports the development of doctrine, policy, publications, and other resources on statelessness. It provides guidance and field support on statelessness and nationality-law issues to UNHCR’s many country operations around the world. Work on statelessness at UNHCR is busy and interesting as UNHCR has entered the final two years of the #IBelong Campaign to End Statelessness by 2024. The position Under the supervision of the Chief of the Statelessness Section, and working closely with all members of the team, interns are expected to contribute to the work of the Section and undertake specific responsibilities as described below. Duties and responsibilities \u2022 Undertake an extended research assignment to be agreed in consultation with the Statelessness Section upon commencement of the internship; \u2022 Conduct research to support the development of new legal and policy papers on statelessness; \u2022 Assist with the preparation of the quarterly #IBelong Campaign Updates; \u2022 Gather and disseminate weekly news round-ups on statelessness; \u2022 Assist with preparations for advocacy events and other outreach efforts; \u2022 Assist with the day-to-day work of the Section (support to the field, drafting of briefing notes and report inputs, distribution of statelessness related materials etc.). Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required The candidate must be a recent graduate (have graduated within two years prior to application) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school The ideal candidate will hold/have: \uf0b7 An undergraduate degree in international law, international human rights law, international relations, political science or a related field. \uf0b7 Academic or practical experience relating to refugee issues, statelessness, nationality or human rights law. \uf0b7 Excellent analytic and drafting skills, legal drafting skills will be highly beneficial. \uf0b7 Experience working in diverse settings. A positive and flexible attitude. \uf0b7 Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required. Knowledge of another UN language would be an asset. \uf0b7 Location The successful candidate will be based with the statelessness team at UNHCR in Geneva, Switzerland. Conditions The internship is a full-time role with working hours from approximately 9am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday (with one hour lunch). Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a food and local transportation allowance which amounts to 50% of the monthly salary of GS3 Step 1 (approx. CHF 2,600 per months). In cases where a sponsored intern receives funding (less than the amount of allowance described above) from the sponsoring institution or another sponsor, UNHCR will pay the difference between this amount and the above allowance, if any.
