Immigrants who voted for Brexit are angry that they can’t immigrate to Spain due to Brexit. The growing number of denials during the post-Brexit Spanish residence application procedure is causing a lot of annoyance among expats. According to recent data, 2,400 applications have been denied this year. The initial deadline to apply for the Withdrawal Agreement with the EU and still be protected was December 31, 2020.
Many expats were established in Spain by the end of the year, but time was running out for some of them. Those who believe they are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement, on the other hand, may still apply. Those who are not covered by the agreement and want to apply for residency again must start the process in England, at the Spanish Consulate.
However, a legal expert responding to The Express, Diego Echavarria, claims that the Consulate is being overly rigorous, “turning down a lot of petitions for trivial reasons.” He claims that English nationals must now meet the entrance standards of nations outside the EU, such as Asia or Africa, which are “very difficult to meet.” The residency deadline was widely publicized in expat publications, particularly on the Costa Del Sol, where Diego lives.
Some Britons, on the other hand, did not believe the consequences would be that severe. There is still time to apply if you can show that you lived in the nation before the deadline, but the mountain of documentation is more than some individuals can handle. Diego claims that some applications have been denied for “nonsense” grounds.
“We’ve seen claims dismissed because they were frivolous. We’ve been asked to show that the individual owned or rented property in the area, and they’ve asked for a copy of the leasing contract as well as a copy of the grocery bill, among other things.”
They turned it down because they didn’t think the individual was in Spain. They appealed, but were turned down again.” He hopes that the two nations can agree on residency permits so that Spain may once again welcome Britons.
