Services / Scope of Work
Background:

  • In fiscal year 2021 (FY 21), USAID Advancing Nutrition Nigeria conducted a value chain and food group workshop to identify commodities of focus for their upcoming food systems programming. Selected commodities for increased consumption include legumes (soybean and groundnut), dark green leafy vegetables (moringa and spinach), bio-fortified foods (OFSP), and ASFs (egg and fish).
  • Now that the value chain commodities have been identified, the next step is to understand the key factors influencing the consumption (as well as the purchase, as purchase often is directly linked to consumption) of these foods in order to design the social and behavior change (SBC) activities and messages that USAID Advancing Nutrition Nigeria will conduct in fiscal year 2022.
  • The selected consultant will lead rapid formative research on consumer demand among caregivers of young children in three states: Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kebbi, to understand consumer demand for those selected commodities to inform potential SBC activities and feed into future consumer demand related programming Nigeria.

Objectives

  • The purpose of the consultancy is to support the Nigeria FY 22 work plan activity 5.1.8 by providing technical support to the consumer demand rapid formative research study to be conducted in Bauchi, Kebbi, and Sokoto states.

Activities
The data collectors will work in close collaboration with the lead research consultant to:

  • Training: Participate in the hybrid online/in person study training for the data collection tools and study design
  • Pre-test of the tool: Work with lead researcher to pre-test the data collection tool in focus group discussions that will be determined either in Bauchi, Kebbi or Sokoto state.
  • Data collection: Facilitate actively participate in data collection through the focus group discussions, supported by other trained qualitative data collectors. This will include traveling to each site during data collection in each of the three states: Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kebbi. The contractor is also expected to participate debriefing and data quality check as may be determined by the lead researcher and USAID Advancing Nutrition team.
  • Data interpretation: Participate in interpretation sessions that make meaning of that data collected during the focus group discussions.
  • Note-taking: Transcribe and translate interview/ FGD notes (English and Hausa)

Activities 4 and 5 require travel to Bauchi, Kebbi, and Sokoto states. We estimate that total travel will be around 15 days. This includes 3-4 days in each state, specifically: 2 days (total) of enumerator training and 10-13 days of data collection.

Deliverables and Schedule
The Contractor is responsible for the timely submission of the following deliverables, as part of the SOW:

The total LOE is approximately equivalent to (15) days.

All required deliverables and reports shall be submitted to the JSI Activity Manager listed above.

Consultant Qualifications
The consultant will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • The candidate should possess minimum of B.Sc. or National Diploma with multi-year experience in FGD facilitation, data collection, data entry and analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating focus group discussions
  • Demonstrated experience in collecting qualitative nutrition data
  • Demonstrated experience in collecting social and behavior change data
  • Demonstrated experience probing on underlying drivers of food consumption (access to food, taste of food, gender roles, attitudes and beliefs around foods, social/cultural norms)
  • Proficient in English (written and oral communication skills) and Hausa (oral communication skills).
