Mission and objectives

UNDP ( UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ) Congo, present in the Republic of Congo since October 23, 1976, thanks to its partner network in 177 countries, aims to support the reconstruction and development efforts of the Republic of Congo and to promote sustainable development through the strengthening of institutional capacities, advisory services, strong and strategic partnerships and support for national execution. UNDP is the global development network available to the United Nations system. It forges partnerships at all levels of society to help build resilient nations to achieve growth that improves everyone’s quality of life. UNDP offers a global perspective and local knowledge at the service of peoples and nations.

Context

The United Nations Development Program ( UNDP ) operates in more than 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and increase sustainability. In this difficult scenario, the development of partnerships is a crucial aspect for the achievement of the objectives of the UNDP and the engagement of different institutions among the private and public sectors.

Task description

Within the framework of the delegated authority and under the supervision of the national economist of the UNDP, the UNV economist-statistician will have the tasks of :

  •  Accompany UNDP advocacy efforts through the compilation, analysis and interpretation of statistical and economic data, research on economic and development issues in the country as well as the preparation of analyzes, notes and relevant reports on the socio-economic situation Collect and analyze economic, social and environmental data;
  •  Support the formulation and implementation of development projects;
  •  Support the evaluation of progress and the formulation of strategies to achieve the SDGs
  •  Support the production of periodic reports and notes on the country’s development situation, to be used by partners;
  •  Targeted analysis of data and critical judgment of information;
  •  Summary office documents;
  •  Assist in the organization of workshops and weeks;
  •  Support in the processing of information using software;
  •  Analyze and synthesize the results of the studies.
  •  Present the results of their work to the supervisor in a clear and accessible manner
  •  Any other related task that may be required or assigned by the supervisor. In addition, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the mandate of the UN Volunteers program into their mission and to promote volunteer action by engaging with communities as part of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should devote part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
  •  Strengthening their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteering by reading relevant and external publications and actively participating in activities ( e.g. at events that mark International Volunteer Day );
  •  Know and develop traditional and / or local forms of volunteering in the host country;
  •  Provide annual and end-of-assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  •  Contribute to articles / writings on field experiences and submit them for publications / websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. ;
  •  Assist with the Sponsorship Program for newly arrived UN Volunteers
  •  Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant individuals and local organizations to use the online volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Required experience

4 years of experience in

  •  Excellent oral and written skills;
  •  Excellent writing, formulation and reporting skills;
  •  Ability and willingness to learn continuously; being open to change, adapting to changing circumstances and varied situations;
  •  Be able to work in a team and independently, seek alternatives and implement practical solutions;
  •  Work methodically and rigorously;
  •  Mastery of monitoring and evaluation tools; design and implementation of an information system; statistical analysis; data science; statistical communication; and database management;
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills; cultural and social sensitivity; ability to work inclusive and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations and authorities at different levels; knowledge of communication for development tools and approaches;
  •  Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a difficult environment; ability to work effectively within a multicultural team of international and national staff;
  •  Strong overall computer knowledge, including proficiency in various MS Office applications ( Excel, Word, etc. ) and email / internet and office automation equipment;
  •  Self-motivated, ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  •  Good security awareness;
  •  Have an affinity or interest in voluntaryism as a mechanism for sustainable development and the United Nations system.

Required education level

Master degree or equivalent in

  •  Master’s degree in economics, statistics or a related field;
  •  At least 4 years of professional experience at the national and / or international level as a statistical analyst, database manager, monitoring & evaluation officers, Data-Scientists, or other relevant programs; banking experience is an asset, as is work experience at the UN or other international development organization;
