“You’re not bigger than covid” Florida Surgeon General thrown out of a meeting after refusing to wear mask. Officials verified that Florida’s top health official was asked to leave a meeting after refusing to wear a mask at the office of a state lawmaker who informed him that she had a significant medical condition.

Wilton Simpson, the Republican leader of the Florida Senate, released a note to senators on Saturday in response to the incident in the office of Democratic state Sen. Tina Polsky, asking visitors to be courteous in their social contacts. Polsky, who represents sections of Broward and Palm Beach counties, had not yet revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The tense argument with state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, which was originally published by the news site Florida Politics, was described by Polsky to The Associated Press.

When Ladapo and two aides came for the Wednesday meeting, she claimed they were given masks and asked to wear them. She didn’t say she had breast cancer; instead, she indicated she was in a critical situation.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer patients are more likely to become very sick from COVID-19 and may not develop the same level of vaccination protection.

Ladapo had requested a meeting with her in Tallahassee as he seeks Senate confirmation after being appointed to the position by Gov. Ron DeSantis last month.

“The way he handled me was really surprising to me,” Polsky added. “I am quite concerned about a future public health emergency and not being able to rely on him for critical direction and adequate scientific leadership if he remains surgeon general for the next many years.”

Ladapo offered to accompany the senator outdoors, but she declined because her office was pleasant and big and she did not want to sit on the metal picnic tables on a hot day. She claimed she inquired as to why he couldn’t wear a mask, but he refused to respond.

Democratic state Sen. Tina Polsky, as a person with a compromised immune system due to presumed cancer treatments, should not be placing herself in a position which might compromise her health. Sadly, she chose a meeting in her office rather than the safety of an outdoor meeting. Why did she keep the secret? Was this a power-play for the immune compromised to dictate to the rest of us that we must do as they say?
