WHO ARE WE ?

Doctors of the World is an international medical development NGO that is part of an international network. We provide medical assistance to vulnerable groups in Belgium and around the world.
We strive for universal health coverage where everyone has access to care, without barriers (financial, cultural, geographical, etc.).

In Belgium and around the world, our projects are aimed at all those who do not have or no longer have access to healthcare. In particular, they are structured around five axes: people on the margins of society (homeless people, undocumented people, drug users, sex workers, etc.); children in vulnerable situations; women (supported in their fight for equality or against sexual violence, for example); migrants or displaced persons; and victims of crises or conflicts.

To carry out our mission, we rely on three pillars:

  • Bearing witness : We don’t stay silent. Thanks to our experience and our presence on the ground, we challenge the authorities (local, regional, and (inter)national) with facts, figures, and realities.

THE ESSENTIAL

Within the General Services and Finance Department, you will be responsible for all aspects of accounting management in order to contribute to the achievement of good financial management within the organization.

The position ensures the supervision of a team of 5 staff and is under the hierarchical responsibility of the Finance Manager position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As Chief Accountant : Responsible for the organization’s proper accounting management in accordance with Belgian law.
Guide and advise the accounting team’s employees on the use of tools, procedures, and the execution of policies as defined within the finance department and in the annual action plans.
Examples of tasks:

  • Accounting Supervision : Lead and supervise the accounting team, ensuring the allocation of tasks and monitoring individual performance. Coordinate accounting activities, including general accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Encode OD Subsidies under the supervision of the Finance Manager. Supervise the invoice encoding and payment release process (i.e. ISABEL); etc. Identify and resolve operational and technical problems encountered by the various team members.
  • Accounting Closing : Coordinate the annual accounts closing process in conjunction with the auditor, under the supervision of the Finance Manager. Ensure that all transactions are correctly recorded, evaluated and justified; etc.
  • Preparation of Financial Statements : participate in the preparation of financial statements for internal and external bodies (i.e. MdM Network, Annual Activity Report, Annual Tax Declaration, BNB publication, Statbel, etc.). Provide financial analyses to assist management in decision-making; etc.
  • Compliance and Taxation : Ensure compliance with local and international accounting standards. Collaborate with external auditors during annual audits. Contribute to responding to auditor questions and follow up on recommendations in conjunction with the General Services department. Manage tax matters and coordinate with tax advisors. Ensure monitoring of the accuracy of accounting principles and archiving principles in accordance with Belgian law, etc.
  • Cash Management : ensuring cash management, with cash flow projections (monitoring available funds, expected inflows and outflows, minimizing foreign exchange risks, bank reconciliation, etc.); in conjunction with banks. Optimizing liquidity management to ensure the availability of necessary funds; etc.
  • Automation and Process Improvement : Identify opportunities to automate accounting processes. Propose and implement improvements to increase operational efficiency (including the creation of dashboards). Implement the installation of new accounting software. Develop and update guides and manuals (e.g., accounting management guide, etc.); etc.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with other departments : reconciling donations with marketing, under the supervision of the Finance Manager, and managing the encoding of donations; etc.
  • Relay to management : act as an alert to the Finance Manager in the event of financial risks, monitor provisions linked to these financial risks; etc.

As a Team Manager : Coordinate the work of the team’s various collaborators by strengthening cohesion and motivation in order to ensure an optimal working environment based on the department’s resources and priorities.
Examples of tasks:

  • Training and Development : Supervise and train the accounting team to develop individual and collective skills. Evaluate and set objectives for employees, develop individual action plans, allocate activities and ensure their coordination. Support, encourage and motivate each employee in their progress and increase their understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, provide monthly feedback to each employee and request feedback for themselves. Ensure, through coaching or training, the optimization of employees’ skill levels.
  • Team Organization : Plan and recruit team members. Participate in discussions about restructuring the team’s organizational chart if necessary. Organize backups within the team.
  • Daily team management: Planning, organizing, and leading team meetings, ensuring that decisions are communicated and minutes are written. Ensuring that the team remains informed of accounting and regulatory developments; etc. Supervising interns in carrying out certain tasks.

YOUR PROFILE

FORMATION ET EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate or Master’s degree in accounting, management sciences or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role, including at least 1 year of experience in team management.

SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE

  • Mastery of accounting principles according to Belgian law.
  • Perfect mastery of the Office Pack (Excel mastery essential).
  • Master and configure WINBOOKS and SAGA accounting software.
  • Isabel’s Mastery.
  • Master internal financial reports (balance sheet, income statement, etc.).
  • Perfect command of French.
  • Analytical mind and great rigor in processing information.
  • Affinity with the non-profit sector.
  • Good personal organization.

ASSET

  • Fluency in Dutch and/or English

WE OFFER

  • An exciting job in a dynamic, family-oriented environment, within a team of professionals.
  • A permanent, full-time contract (100% – 5 days a week – 39 hours)
  • A gross salary of €4,083.60 for 5 years of experience; a gross salary of €4,278.06 for 10 years of experience; Relevant experience recognized.
  • Restaurant vouchers (€8, including €1.09 per employee and €6.91 per employer) – Hospitalization insurance – 100% reimbursement of public transport costs.
  • Holidays : 20 statutory days + 6 RTT days + 4 extra statutory days between Christmas and New Year.
  • Possibility of teleworking up to 2 days/week, with a bonus of €14/day for the entire month.
