(BREAKING WIDE) — Australian Researcher Finds Effective COVID-19 Face Mask That ‘The Virus’ Can’t Penetrate.
A single cough can produce up to 3,000 droplets. There are fears the virus can also be spread simply through speaking. One recent study showed that we spray thousands of droplets invisible to the naked eye into the air just by uttering the words “stay healthy”.
A new study suggests not just any mask but homemade face masks with two or three layers is more effective in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 compared with a single-layered face covering. Australian researcher carried out a video study comparing the effectiveness of different layers of cloth masks to surgical masks in their ability to stop the transmission of droplets in the air when speaking, coughing and sneezing
The study found the effectiveness varied in the cloth masks based on the number of the layers. The single-layer masks reduced spreading droplets from speaking, but the double-layer face covering was better at preventing the spread of droplets from coughing and sneezing, the authors stated.
Face coverings shows the risk of infection to the wearer is reduced by 65 percent, said Dean Blumberg, Chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis children’s hospital.
The Australian researchers used a LED lighting system and a high-speed camera to capture the scattered droplets in the air expelled by sneezing, coughing and speaking from a healthy individual wearing the different masks.
The one-layer covering was made following the no-sew method, while the two-layer covering was made following guidelines from CDC.
“Face masks could help to reduce transmission in the community particularly if used in public transport and crowded areas,” says Ben Cowling, head of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Hong Kong, BBC reported.
The study concluded that wearing a face mask overall is helpful in stopping the spread of the coronavirus.
