Grants Accountant At Opportunity International


The Grants Accountant plays the central role at Opportunity in fulfilling this commitment for grants and projects related to Opportunity’s restricted funds including USAID awards, as well as corporate and private grants. The role will act as the financial business advisor to the Program Managers. This position’s focus is to provide three key items to the company (1) providing business reports to all levels of the organization in relation to financial projects, (2) focusing on transactional excellence in supporting financial projects, and (3) ensuring adequate compliance and controls regarding policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Financial & Administrative Management

  • Track grant agreements and contracts funded by USAID, corporate and private donors
  • Ensure set up (revenue funds, project numbers, overhead) in Raiser’s Edge, Financial Edge, and Concur
  • Document and ensure allocation to projects of all expenditures are accurate.
  • Review timesheets, calculate compensation and fringe benefit allocations, and maintain all related supporting documentation
  • Monitor and report grant spend, forecasts, and balances
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition and invoicing per contractual and grant terms in accordance with accounting standards
  • Actively manage project-specific items including deferred revenue, open AR and pledges, expenses, etc.
  • Move funds to appropriate program allocations through journal entries
  • Review monthly results with finance staff prior to month-end close
  • Manage project costs along with the Project Managers in order to be aware of potential project cost variances and cash flow management
  • Participate in monthly financial project review meetings to discuss project spend, activity updates, and potential variances or pending transactions
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to program and finance management
  • Close out project accounts upon project completion

Reporting

  • Support annual budget planning by identifying available funding for various programs, countries, and specific work plans, including personnel expenses.
  • Produce or review all financial donor reporting as required by each grant or contract, including financial reports, comparison to grant budgets and forecasting, and other reporting and support as required by the donor
  • Provide financial reports and documentation for annual external audits and grant audits

Business Development

  • Provide support to Opportunity US’s business development team by assisting in the development or review of budgets and cost proposals for grant applications and private proposals
  • Documentation and coordinate the completion of due diligence and vetting documents from donors and funders
  • Participate as needed in monitoring or due diligence visits relating to grants or projects

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; BS/BA in Accounting, Finance, or Economics or related preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in financial grant management, including managing Federal awards
  • Experience in the public sector (USAID, USDA, UNCDF, or similar) preferred
  • Experience with accounting software (Financial Edge) database reporting and analytical software, preferably including Blackbaud software (Raiser’s Edge/Smartsheets/Box).
  • Proficient in Office 365, with strong Microsoft Excel skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability
  • Diplomacy, good judgment, and ability to work across different cultures
  • Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines and to independently prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Written and verbal fluency in English is required. Fluency in French or Spanish desirable.
